Note: – Remember, these helmet laws we mentioned here are specifically for those living in Australia.
Things to look while buying a new helmet
Like DOT and Snell M2015 are currently using in the United States and nearby countries as a safety standard, similarly, AS1698 or UNECE 22.05 are using here as a safety standard which every rider must ensure that the helmet they wear or purchase approved from ECE 22.05 safety standards. This is recognized as a European standard.
Many riders are purchasing helmet which exceeds European safety standard. But, few are unable to find a decent store to buy a new one.
What stickers and labels should be on my helmet?
As we mentioned AS1698 and UNECE 22.05 standards must be on your helmet. Now, the question is, where?
Well, Police in many states believes that AS1698 CAB Sticker must be on the exterior part of the helmet and the AS1698 only requires a label sewn into the liner. However, UNECE 22.05 only needs a label on the chin strap or liner.
Can we use Bluetooth or Camera with a helmet?
Well, in many countries using Bluetooth or camera with a helmet is legal but there are many countries where this law is in “gray area”. There are a lot of argument and discussions over the usage of Bluetooth or other accessories with the helmet. In many states, riders are drilling holes to fit the accessory attachment with the helmet which is not legal. Unlike, DOT and Snell approved helmets, AS1698, and UNECE 22.05 approved helmets haven’t been updated to specify accessory attachment methods.
I hate to say that, but using Bluetooth and camera with your helmet so carelessly will not be suitable for you and considered as against the law. However, Police or bike cops in all states have cameras and Bluetooth units attached to their helmets.
Usage of Helmet Stickers or Paint
Just like Bluetooth and Camera, using stickers or paint your helmet is also in “gray area”. Plus, using various glues and different solvents can destroy the helmet’s structural integrity. Hope, you don’t wanna compromise your helmet’s safety.
Are tinted visors and goggles legal?
Modern optical treatments or internal visors exceeds the limits on visible light transmittance (VLT) of AS1698 and UNECE 22.05 specified limits on visible light transmittance for tinted visors. Both standards have an average limit of 50-85% VLT for allowing tinting. On the other side, as long as goggles are not tinted, you can use those with helmets. It is totally legal. In fact, in nowadays goggles are designed for use it with helmets.
