Shoei J-Cruise is the Cadillac in the industry of helmets. It is a premium motorcycle helmet with open-face construction for touring comfort with the ultimate protection for your head. It is an outstanding example of the open-face helmet that possesses the luxury, comfort, and safety you won’t see in other open-face helmets.
To be brutally honest, it is my favorite open-face motorcycle helmet. I would choose this helmet over any open-face helmet every time.
The one thing I particularly like about the Shoei J-Cruise helmet is its protection level that is way ahead of your average full-face motorcycle helmets. Yeah, I agree the helmet has no chin bar to protect your front but it is equipped with the same technology that Shoei uses in its top-of-the-line full-face and modular motorcycle helmets.
Let’s see what’s so special about the Shoei J-Cruise motorcycle helmet.
Shell Design & Protection Level
It has been learned that touring riders choose open-face helmets over full-face helmets and modular helmets because they are more comfortable, lightweight, and provide optimal airflow during summer weather.
While talking to some riders, I realized that they give more priority to comfort rather than safety when it comes to long touring rides. I understand, the cruiser riders don’t need the same level of protection as Moto GP riders need but they still need protection.
And that’s where the Shoei J-Cruise helmet comes into the picture. The Shoei J-Cruise is like any other Shoei full-face motorcycle helmet, except without a chin bar. This is because it uses the same advanced integrated matrix shell (AIM), which is a multi-ply matrix shell technology, widely recognized for its lightweight and strong build construction. It incorporates a multi-piece EPS liner, which is a composition of multiple densities of the layer that can absorb heavy impact during a crash.
The helmet has an intermediate oval shape and comes in 4 different shell sizes. Also, your average open-face helmets don’t have DOT compliance; however, the Shoei J-Cruise is DOT approved. That means it has gone through rigorous testing to end up being a trusty helmet that can actually protect you during your ride.
Aerodynamics & Noise Levels
If we talk about aerodynamics, then the Shoei J-Cruise is aerodynamically tested, which means that during rides at high speeds you won’t have to face issues like drag and lift.
Many times, it’s been determined that open-face helmets tend to create more noise because of no chin-bar and short face-shield. However, that’s not the case with the Shoei J-Cruise helmet because it has a long face-shield that covers most of your face and blocks straight-on headwinds.

So, if you’re looking for enhanced peripheral vision and optical clarity, then the Shoei J-Cruise helmet would be perfect for you.
It has a scratch-resistant coating that also happens to block 99 percent of UV-A & B rays. The helmet has an internal sun shield visor built-in. It is the QSV-1 sun shield, recognized for providing instant relief from the sun’s glare in one easy step.
The QSV-1 sun shield meets the ANSI Z80.3-2010 standard for non-prescription sunglasses.
The Shoei J-Cruise helmet has one large switch to activate the 3D injection-molded inner sun shield.
The ventilation system in the Shoei J-Cruise is the same as the ventilation system in the Shoei GT-Air. The front vents allow cool air to pass through the two holes to the EPS liner for a smooth passage of air to the rider’s head and 2 rear exhaust vents and 1 neck exhaust vent to remove the hot air from the helmet for optimal airflow.

‘Helmet amenities’ is quite a new thing to many riders who are daily commuters but it’s not new to motorcycle enthusiasts like the rest of us. For them, a simple DOT-compliant helmet is sufficient to think that they are safe. But, the characteristics and comfort matter as much as safety. This is why people like us exist so that we can help you get what you need.
If you’re having trouble finding an open-face helmet that allows you to block the sun glare, oppose the wind, and enjoy the ride at the same time, then the next helmet on our list of open-face helmets will allow you to do all of the above mentioned.
The helmet I’m talking about is none other than the OF569 Track open-face helmet, crafted and brought to life by LS2 itself. The Shark Street Drak is quite a popular aviation-styled open-face helmet with a distinct style and design that makes it completely different from other open-face motorcycle helmets.
Formerly known as Shark RAW, the Drak is an open-face helmet that was first introduced in 2013. Since then the helmet has made quite a reputation in the helmet industry.
One thing I love about the Shark is that they never stop experimenting with innovations, as they did with this ¾ motorcycle helmet. The Shark Street Drak is an open-face helmet but comes with off-road styled goggles and a face mask instead of a visor.
Let’s have a close look at this helmet and find out what sort of features it is offering.
Shell Design & Protection Level
The Shark Drak is a lightweight, oval-shaped helmet that weighs only around 2.61 pounds. Also, it is available in two different shell sizes, which fit most head sizes. The helmet is constructed of an injected thermoplastic resin, which is capable of providing protection to your head in the event of a crash; however, the protection level will not be as advanced as you see in full-face and modular motorcycle helmets.

Goggles & Face Mask
First, we will talk about the goggles. As we know, this helmet designed by Shark is an aviation-styled motorcycle helmet, so goggles were a given.
So, the question is, how will these goggles be a benefit to us?
Well, according to the company, the goggles are double-glazed and provide protection from scratching and fogging. The goggles lenses are manufactured by Carl Zeiss and provide a wide range of fog-free vision to the rider. In addition, the riders that use the Shark Street Drak have no complaints regarding the goggles. On the contrary, they find it quite easy to move their head and cheeks with the goggles on, as compared to full-face motorcycle helmets.
Now let’s talk about the face mask. The face mask that comes with the Shark Street Drak open-face helmet is detachable. You can wear it with or without goggles. So, you can unclip it in case you feel like enjoying the cool breeze in your face.
Even if you wear both the goggles and the face mask at the same time, you will give yourself a good level of protection for your face. But, I would still warn you, “Do not take it for granted that it will provide protection like a full-face helmet.”
The purpose of this face mask is to provide you with an edge while riding on off-road terrains. The mask is for catching flies and road muck rather than providing protection in a crash. If it is some mild riding that you do in the woods, then the Shark Street Drak would be nice to have. It can work as an alternative to a dirt bike motorcycle helmet.
When reviewing the upper ventilation system in Shark Street Drak helmet, then the forehead has air intake vents to allow cool air to pass through the liner of the helmet and channel all-round the head. It is a large forehead vent that’s sealed with a removable rubber bung.
So, the forehead vent is quite good and will allow cool air to pass through the liner of the helmet to your head. However, if you are looking to get just as much ventilation to your face then, as you know, it is an open-face helmet, so you can also use it without goggles and mask.
Otherwise, you will be amazed to know that riders who use the Shark Street Drak helmet are surprised to see more than average ventilation in the chin area even with the mask on. A decent amount of fresh air passes through the face mask to the rider’s face.
Overall, I can say that the helmet meets the Motorcyclist Lifestyle’s standard of ventilation and can offer optimal airflow to the rider while riding.
Interior & Comfort Level
The interior padding of the Shark Street Drak motorcycle helmet is made from natural fibers, which have characteristics, such as moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic. The cheek pads are completely washable and removable.
But, ensure you hand-wash them because the fabric is textile and should be treated with the utmost delicacy.

After going through rigorous testing, the helmet performed as a reliable open-face helmet that stays snugly in place and has no issue of lifting even when at high-speed. Personally, if you ask me, it is remarkable to see that such a small helmet has no lifting issues. Besides, there are many open-face helmets that are available on the market – more expensive, yet failed to pass the helmet lift test.

The helmet incorporates a dual-density EPS liner that absorbs heavy impacts during a crash. The helmet is DOT approved and can be used as a full-face motorcycle helmet or open-face motorcycle helmet.
If it is airflow that you desire, then you can get plenty of it but at a greater sacrifice. The Scorpion Covert helmet has an excellent ventilation system. This is due to the fact that the helmet can be converted into three different configurations depending on the riding conditions.
Although; as we said earlier, the helmet can offer three different configurations, it is still an open-face motorcycle helmet – neither a full-face nor a modular!
The helmet allows cool air to pass through the visor and face mask inside the helmet to keep you cool and dry while riding. At the same time, it channels the humidity and heat to the ventilation ducts in the back of the helmet, so that you stay as cool as a cucumber. But, since it’s a face mask and not the chin bar of a modular helmet, you may also get some noise due to the nature of the modular design.
But, don’t worry! The noise level won’t bother you. It is because the Scorpion chose the Aero-tuned ventilation system for the Covert motorcycle helmet, which is comprised of two intake forehead vents to allow cool air to channel through the EPS liner to the rider’s head.
The lower vent is in the face mask that also offers some great ventilation. No doubt, the helmet can be used for three seasons but it is not recommended to wear in winter conditions.
Visor & Face Mask
The Scorpion Covert motorcycle helmet incorporates a SpeedView internal tinted sun visor along with a clear visor for night riding. The visor or shield that the Covert helmet comes with has a sliding feature, which offers a clear visor when the sun visor is up.

The Scorpion Covert is not a full-fledged full-face or modular motorcycle helmet. When you feel as though you need protection for your head, then you should buy a full-face helmet.
